The digital divide continues to grow in America and around the world. More citizens must understand the advancements of technology for them to compete in a changing and globalized world, especially the poor. According to statistics, "in 1990, the world's most affluent 20% of citizens were garnering 85% of the wealth.
By 2000, that figure had doubled, while the percentage of wealth held by the poor was cut in half from eight to four percent. By 2010, it will probably double again. Noting that in this period digital technology became the driving force of globalization, Nobel economist Joseph Stiglitz was correct when he asserted that new technologies are driving this inequity."
